Getting around Portsmouth on foot has never been easier, thanks to the Millennium Promenade. Starting at Clarence Pier and finishing at The Hard (taking in Old Portsmouth, the Camber and Gunwharf Quays along the way), this three-mile route couldn't be easier to walk - all you need to do is follow the chain motif set into the path. This chain isn't just for decorative purposes, though. It's emblematic of the chain which used to be tightened across the harbour entrance during times of potential attack.
Portsmouth's flat profile also makes it ideal for cycling. There are a variety of official cycle routes wending through the city, which are detailed in our Cycle Maps page. Additionally there are plenty of themed cycle routes in Portsmouth, taking in everything from the city's architecture to our famous women, and even some of the island's unique bike racks.
Even if you don't have a bike, there are numerous rental outlets, as well as places offering spares, repairs and general advice.
