Make Do and Mend Embroidery Techniques

About

The Royal School of Needlework hosts a ‘Make Do and Mend Embroidery Techniques’ workshop at The D-Day Story with expert tutor Sonja Galsworthy.

The D-Day Story has a proud and long-standing partnership with the prestigious Royal School Needlework (RSN), whose members stitched the Overlord Embroidery from 1968 to 1974.

Founded in 1872, the RSN’s Embroidery Studio  creates stunning bespoke embroidery commissions for fashion, art and royalty, as well as expertly restoring and conserving valuable and historical embroidered pieces and historical textiles.

In the spirit of ‘Make Do and Mend’, RSN Tutor Sonja Galsworthy will be teaching various methods for visible darning, covering how to make a feature of moth holes, tears and worn patches of your well-loved garments. Using the Japanese example of celebrating the repair rather than making it invisible, Sonja will cover Sashiko patches, Appliqué, Visible Darning, Eyelets and other Surface Stitches, using contrasting colours so the stitching shows. Soon your favourite clothes will all tell a new and unique story!

The ‘Make do and Mend’ campaign was introduced by the British government during World War Two to encourage people to get as much wear as possible out of the clothes they already had. Evening classes were set up to teach people how to repair old clothes rather than throw them away.

The workshop is £125, you book through the Royal School of Needlework website here.
