Portsmouth Psych Fest is a brand new festival taking place at the legendary Wedgewood Rooms. It's delivered in association with Casemates Studios and sponsored by Sailor Jerrys. The line up will consist of 14 acts featuring the best talent from the local and national psychedelic, shoegaze and post punk scene.
Among the acts confirmed so far are:
Bo Ningen (Headliners) are a neo-psychedelia 4-piece from Tokyo, Gunmma, Tajimi and Nishinomiya, but who all met in London. They are signed to Stolen Recordings and licensed to Sony Music Associated Records in Japan. They have just finished touring with The Fall, Primal Scream and they will arrive back in the UK in April after a Japan tour and supporting The Pixies.
Ulrika Spacek released their highly acclaimed debut album last year. DIY Mag said: "The Album Paranoia" takes the listener on a mind-altering journey through Ulrika Spacek’s supernatural soundscape, though a maze guitars that drone menacingly and chime harmoniously – often together." Most people will have seen them live supporting DIIV last year, and they have played an array of Psych Fests including Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia, Rome Psych Fest and Eindhoven Psych Fest.
Melt Dunes are a Portsmouth & Southampton-based heavy doom psych act who are set to release their new single ‘Flesh’ on Strong Island Recordings February 17th "Truly menacing and hauntingly evil in its relentless delivery, Melt Dunes offering falls somewhere between The Stooges circa ’69 and NY proto-punks Suicide, chewed up and spat out through the repetitive krautrock slant of Neu!/CAN. Although blatantly influenced by the dark, experimental corners of music’s underground tapestry the band still manage to sound completely innovative" Gigwise
Vinyl Staircase, who come hotly tipped by Wolf Alice and who have already bagged support slots with Cabbage, Blossoms and Palm Honey, are a young 4-piece from Dorking and certainly ones to watch. Poetic mesmerising songs that capture Shoegaze, Psychedelic Fuzz and a slight hint of Math Rock thrown into the Mix. Their new single ‘German Wings’ has just been premiered over on NME.

Commenting on the event, Festival Director Nicki Allen said: "As a long time psychedelic festival goer that has travelled up and down the country to attend amazing festivals that other cities do so well, I thought it was time to try it out in my hometown. There is a big appreciation for this genre of music here in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas, and I aim to help promote Portsmouth by presenting a range of exciting musical acts. I hope this will help promote the area, venues, businesses and community in the process."
